Individual health care plans are for those who are
either self-employed, underinsured, or have no health insurance. The individual plans are sold directly to the individuals.
Plans vary and typically fall under four categories. These are Fee-for-Service, Managed Care, HMO's, and PPO's.
A Fee-for-Service plan is the traditional type of health care plan. Individuals and groups can purchase this type of insurance. In a Fee-for-Service plan, the insurance company reimburses the doctor, hospital, etc.
for either all or a percentage of the fees charged. Under these plans, a premium is paid and there is usually a deductible
which must be met before the policy is applicable.
A Managed Care plan is also applicable to either individuals
or groups. These types of plans are managed by the insurance companies, and treatments must be approved.
HMO policies are
managed care health plans. The patient's treatment is coordinated by the Primary Care physician. Premiums are typically
paid monthly, and the cost is typically lower the Fee-for-Service plans.
PPO policies combine features of HMO and
Fee-for-Service plans. PPO's utilize a network of physicians and specialists. If the patient stays within network, most
of the bills will be covered provided the patient has met the deductible and co-payment.
